Event #2

The second event that I attended was group advising in October and I went to this event with Ashlee. This event involved an ice breaker and an open group discussion. While I was there I picked my courses for next semester…. MY LAST 3 CLASSES YAY!... Group advising relates to my work in Youth Development because it allows me to have a chance to connect with other students and professors that I do not get to see or have conversations with regularly. The event also relates to YDEV because of the typical Ice Breaker activity that we did. Ice breakers are a major part of this program because of their relation to purposeful play.

I was a dancer for my whole childhood life. Actually, dancing WAS my whole life. This sport took control over my time, my body, and my mind. I loved it when I was younger, but as I reached about age 16 my feelings changed. I wanted to hang out with my friends or just relax for once after school. This weekend I went to Mystic Aquarium with my nephew, Jared. I usually work on Saturdays, but I wanted to make sure I was able to bring him before it gets too cold. At the aquarium, we got to pet the stingrays, see the dinosaurs (Jared’s favorite part), and explore all the kinds of fish. Most of my time there was spent chasing him around the exhibit and laughing. My day engaged Jenkins’ 6 P’s. Injustice (post #9)

A time that I observed an injustice was with my god son Jared. Jared was just 6 days old when my parents became his foster parents. When he turned 1, this sweet boy was reunified with his birth father per DCYF. This was NOT at all in Jared's best interest. Luckily, we remained extremely active in his life when he moved with his dad and step mother. He always screamed and cried when we would have to drop him back off to them. It was traumatizing for him and us. He was constantly locked in his room there and his step mother's children would hit and bite him. He was only placed in their care because his step mother's best friend was a social worker and pushed in their benefit. After a year of this, my parents convinced Jared's dad to work out an agreement for guardianship after showing him the proof of what was going on in his home when he was working (He's a fire fighter so his shifts would take him out of his house for days at a time).
